Inlays & Onlays

Dental inlays and onlays are intended to repair teeth that are moderately damaged by decay and that need some structural support. For decayed teeth that still have healthy cusps, Dr. Williams often recommends an inlay. Inlays are designed to cover the chewing surface of the tooth between the cusps and reinforce an area weakened by decay. If one or more of the cusps are damaged, Dr. Williams uses an onlay or onlays to make the repair. An onlay covers the affected cusp or cusps as well as the chewing surface of the teeth. Both inlays and onlays are constructed from tooth-colored materials that are difficult to distinguish from the original tooth. This makes them good replacements for unsightly metal fillings.

When inlays and onlays are used to repair teeth damage by cavities, they can preserve the tooth and prevent porcelain crowns and dental implants from becoming necessary. This saves patients time and money. In Dr. Williams’ opinion, prevention of future dental problems is a key to effective restorative dentistry.
